Research has shown that a measurement called
body mass index, or
BMI for short, can be used to assess a person's level of body fat. Although BMI does not measure body fat directly, it does correspond pretty closely to direct measures of body fat for most people.
BMI uses a mathematical formula that takes into account both a person's height and weight. The formula is a person's weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (BMI=kg/m2).
To make it easier to calculate a person's body mass index, variations of height and weight have been entered into a BMI chart. This BMI chart can be used by anyone who is at least 58 inches tall (4'10'') and weighs at least 91 pounds.
Use the BMI chart below to determine body mass index. For presentation purposes, the BMI chart has been divided into two tables; you may need to consult the second BMI chart to determine your body mass index. An adult can also figure out his or her BMI by going to the
BMI Calculator.

To use the BMI chart, find the appropriate height (in inches) in the left-hand column labeled Height. Move across to a given weight (in pounds).
